Editions prepared by scientists from the Karelian Research Centre RAS were awarded diplomas of the contest “Republic of Karelia Book of the Year 2021”. “Obonezhye Bylinas Retold for Children” was appraised as the best book in the Republic, the guidebook to geology and mining history “Geological Heritage of Karelia” became the winner in the “Light of Science” category, and the album “Alexander Kharitonov: watercolors, drawings, collages” in the “Book Art” category.

The book “Invasive Plants and Animals in Karelia” has been presented at the Karelian Research Centre RAS. This is the first ‘black book’ of local flora and fauna published in the republic. Its authors told the presentation guests about the alien species that are aggressively occupying the new territory and can affect human health, agriculture, and local ecosystems, and about the international project DIAS within which this new edition was produced.

The Moon influences plants through variations in reflected light. This hypothesis has been experimentally corroborated by Researcher from the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS Viktor Mironov after long-term monitoring of Sphagnum riparium moss growth and lower cloudiness data from weather station.

Mathematicians from the Karelian Research Centre RAS started designing a software system for real-time simulation of the traffic situation in the city. From the practical point of view, it will help manage actual transport flows to improve the situation, and scientifically it will open up new tasks for game theory research.

The Institute of Applied Mathematical Research of the Karelian Research Centre RAS (IAMR KarRC RAS) and the Central University of Kerala (India) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on promoting cooperation in science and education. Scientists will conduct joint studies, in particular related to models and methods of applied probability and game theory.
