Ethnologists rethink the role of Christian traditions in Karelian funeral rituals from the folk religion perspective
The influence of Orthodox traditions on the funeral and memorial rituals of Ludic Karelians is studied by ethnologist Sergey Minvaleev. Funeral rituals are one of the spheres of traditional culture that is most resistant to change; they are still observed, especially by villagers. Because of the atheistic approach, the importance of church requirements and rituals in this sphere was largely ignored in Soviet historiography. In recent decades, scientists in Russia have been revisiting this topic from the perspective of the folk religion - a synthesis of ethnic beliefs and official theological practices.
