Karelian scientists gave a master class on drawing blood samples from trout for early disease diagnosis

On December 12, a workshop was held at the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS for specialists from trout farms of the republic. The main topic was a modern method of blood sampling from fish for laboratory testing, which allows early detection of diseases.

Irina Novak, Director of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature, and History KarRC RAS, has won the Keyword All-Russian Public Award for the preservation of the language diversity. Experts acknowledged the linguist's monograph "The Karelian Language Landscape in the Dialectometric Paradigm", which is based on her Dr.Sci. dissertation. The scholar has developed a modern dialect map of the Karelian language, with its supradialects, dialects, and sub-dialectal groups.

New mineral discovered in Karelia is officially registered

Sulfopadmaite, a mineral discovered in 2025, has been formally registered by the International Mineralogical Association. This is yet another discovery made at Srednyaya Padma deposit on the Zaonezhsky Peninsula.

Mathematicians from Karelia and Italy find a new way to optimize quantum computing

Maria Makarova, a young mathematician from Petrozavodsk, completed her postgraduate studies at KarRC RAS and at the University of Trento, Italy. She now works at the intersection of mathematics and computer science in the field of quantum computing. Quantum computers represent the future, the foundations for which are being laid at this very moment, but as yet, these innovative devices are rather vulnerable: the physical features and the complexity of interactions among quantum particles lead to costly calculation errors. Scientists worldwide, including mathematicians from the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS, are solving problems to optimize such computations.

Winners of the Presidential Nature Fund’s grant competition meet with Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Patrushev

The project to study the biodiversity of Arctic nature in the Paanajärvi National Park was singled out at the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Patrushev and winners of the Presidential Nature Fund’s grant competition. It was presented by Alexandra Smirnova, Director of the North-Center Association and Head of the International Cooperation Department at the Karelian Research Centre RAS, and Mikhail Plyushchenkov, Director of the Paanajärvi National Park.

Doctor of Biological Sciences Olga Bakhmet took part in a meeting of the Council on Fish and Fisheries Sector Development held in Petrozavodsk on December 2nd. Active participants of the meeting were representatives of the executive and legislative authorities of the Republic of Karelia, scientists, and members of the business community. The meeting focused on prospects for the development of the sector in Karelia, utilization of seaweed resources in the White Sea, increasing production volumes, and introducing new types of products.

Project to roll out artificial instream egg incubators wins the Green Prize 2025

The Russian Environmental Operator awarded the winners of the Green Prize 2025. The project recognized as the best in the "Sustainable Practices in the Agricultural Industry" category is "An Integrated Technology with Artificial Nests for Fish Egg Incubation". The devices for the reproduction of young salmonid populations were designed at the Karelian Scientific Center RAS and tested in collaboration with Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company JSC (part of Nornickel). The incubators are being successfully used on rivers in northern Karelia and the Murmansk Region.

Literature scholar Alexander Pigin was awarded Makarius’s Prize for his treatise “17th-18th Century Tales of the Kargopol Land”

Leading Researcher of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS Alexander Pigin was awarded The First Prize in Memoriam of Metropolitan Macarius (Bulgakov) of Moscow and Kolomna for his treatise “17th-18th Century Tales of the Kargopol Land. Saints and Sanctities of Chelmogorskaya, Hergozerskaya, Kenskaya and Lebyazhiia Monasteries”. The Macarius Prize is one of the main awards in the humanities in Russia.

Citizens of Karelia can help scientists explore early-stage disorders and risks of developing serious diseases

Scientists invite volunteers aged 40–59 to take part in a large-scope region study seeking to identify early markers of the yet silent disorders that may later evolve into cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Participants will be asked to give a single blood sample for key laboratory tests. The results can be collected in person or via email. In the long term, this work will enable scientists and medical professionals to detect the threat of serious diseases as early as possible.
