This is the topic of the international conference held by the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS on September 12-14. Over a hundred experts from different regions of Russia and from CIS countries share their research results in a hybrid offline/online format.

The need to create an environmental monitoring system for Karelia and to work out a federal-level ad hoc program for conserving lakes Onego and Ladoga was declared by KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet in the St. Petersburg – Republic of Karelia Business Forum. RAS Corresponding Academician made a presentation during the round-table session on environmental protection.

New aspects of research on female corporeality in the Karelian culture were presented by Yulia Litvin, Researcher from the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS, in the Herald of Anthropology. Women’s daily life long remained an understudied topic: discussion of some aspects used to be a cultural and societal taboo, and this situation has influenced the research tradition.

On August 22-25 the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS is hosting SMARTY 2022 – the 3rd International Workshop on Stochastic Modeling and Applied Research of Technology.

Specialists from the Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS are studying pith wood formation patterns in pine. Pith is largely responsible for tree resistance to weather, first of all windstorms. It also influences timber quality: moisture, color, resistance to decay. Understanding of the mechanisms of pith wood formation is also essential for global studies of carbon cycling.

Staff of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS spent a fortnight on an expedition aboard the Ekolog Research Vessel. Surveys covered virtually all parts of Lake Onego and Vygozerskoe Storage Reservoir during peak water warm-up period. The results will help analyze how human impacts aggravated by climate warming influence the waterbodies.
