A children’s comic book about the geology of Karelia was published in Petrozavodsk. Its characters are four baby animals travelling around well-known places: Mount Vottovaara, Girval paleovolcano and others. The authors of the book are Director of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS Sergey Svetov and artist Anna Danilova.

Media volunteers of the Russian Geographical Society to explore Karelia starting at the KarRC RAS Museum of Applied Environmental Research. October 1st was the launch day of the youth project “RGS Conservation Focus”, which has gathered participants from different parts of the country.

Karelian Research Centre RAS is hosting Arsenyev’s Readings – a conference organized biennially by the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS. Its thematic focus this year is “Questions of economic geography and spatial development statistics”. Specialists from different regions will spend two days discussing high-relevance issues related to tourism, development of Arctic territories, digitalization and statistics.

Museum of Applied Environmental Research opened at the Karelian Research Centre RAS. It was created to communicate the results produced by scientists, to promote public environmental awareness and literacy in natural sciences, and to expand people’s knowledge about the nature of Karelia. The museum has over a thousand items on display.

A presentation of the book “Invasive Plants and Animals in Karelia” was organized for biology teachers from Petrozavodsk schools. The presentation took place at the Karelian Research Centre RAS on September 21. Scientists told the audience about the DIAS project and alien species and shared their experience of collaborating with schools.

Six districts of Karelia – almost 40% of the Republic’s territory – have been included in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Three of them were included only two years ago and their integration in existing Russian Artic development projects is a topical issue. What constrains the development opportunities for the Karelian Arctic? What factors influence population loss? These and other problems were discussed during the KarRC RAS Learned Council meeting on September 15th. The keynote speaker was Junior Researcher from the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS Alexander Volkov.
