Getting schoolchildren and college students fascinated with science is an important objective for scientists at KarRC RAS. Visits to laboratories, presentations at schools and universities, tours of museums - these and many other formats are designed not only to popularize research, but also to encourage young people to take up science as a profession. Olga Bakhmet, KarRC RAS Director General, talked about the career guidance work at a meeting of the Council for Higher Education and Science chaired by the Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov.

Scientists study peculiar archaeological findings on the White Sea coast: hearths of ancient dwellings arranged in chains, the longest one composed of 11 pits. No such sites have been found elsewhere in Russia or Fennoscandia. A story of the integrated study and dating of the sites was told at KarRC RAS Learned Council meeting on November 29 by Senior Researcher at the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS Nadezhda Lobanova and Senior Researcher at the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS Tatyana Shelekhova.

New data by scientists from the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS confirm that 2.5 billion years ago parts of the Baltic Shield, including its Karelian and Belomorian provinces, were components of the ancient Kenorland supercontinent. This finding is important both for theoretical science and in the practical sense – facilitating the search for useful minerals. The results of the study were reported in more detail by Deputy Director of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS Alexandra Stepanova at the Centre’s Learned Council meeting on November 29.

On November 14, Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Valery Falkov had a meeting in Moscow with KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet and Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov. The leaders discussed the prospects for the development of applied science in the region.

Career-guidance tours for schoolchildren given at Karelian Research Centre RAS within the federal project Ticket to the Future. On November 9th, Tatyana Vasilyeva, Researcher at the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Centre RAS, introduced 9th grade students of the Academic Lyceum in Petrozavodsk to the profession of archaeologist.

Karelian Research Centre RAS and Russian National Committee on BRICS Research have concluded a cooperation agreement. The document was signed by KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet and NCR BRICS Executive Director Georgy Toloraya during the International Conference “Scientific-technological and Innovative Cooperation of BRICS Countries”.
