The discovery and analysis of zircon in iron ore in Karelia can ease the search for more valuable raw materials

Karelian scientists discovered zircon within the Kostomuksha iron ore. This mineral helps determine the rock's age and genesis environment. Having analyzed this finding, specialists from the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS learned more about the history of iron ore formation in one of the largest deposits in Russia. In practice, this information can help predict where the best quality ore is to be found.

Scientists from KarRC RAS explored unique natural objects on the Kola Peninsula

Karelian scientists explored unique natural objects on Tersky Coast of the White Sea: palsa mires, which have permafrost at their base, and Kuzomen Sands – a desert in the Arctic. Using remote sensing methods, experts compiled the vegetation map of difficult-to-access areas. Information was collected on rare and conservation-concern species of plants and insects. A more detailed account of the results of integrated expeditions to the Tersky Coast was given at a meeting of the Learned Council of the Karelian Research Centre RAS by Senior Researcher at KarRC RAS Department for Multidisciplinary Research (DMR) Aleksey Kravchenko.

Ornithologists for the first time use 3D technology to study bird behavior and breeding in the Artic

Karelian scientists have applied a new 3D technique to study breeding areas of songbirds. Researchers used 3D analysis to model spaces inhabited by pairs of Willow Warblers. This study can help learn more about the behavior of birds and their adaptations to the habitat. This is especially important in a changing environment, where birds' usual habitats are shrinking under human impact.
