Karelian economists assessed changes in the efficiency of production and economic activities in the process of green transition

The ratio between economic efficiency and fairness in the process of green transformation of industries is recognized as a fundamental problem of the 21st century. Environmental actions involve financial losses. To ensure fairness, tax incentives, state and municipal guarantees and subsidies are needed. This was the topic covered in this KarRC RAS Learned Council session by Valentina Karginova-Gubinova, Senior Researcher at the Department of Regional Economic Policy, Institute of Economics KarRC RAS.

Projects of KarRC RAS researchers supported by Russian Science Foundation grants

Project applications by researchers from the Karelian Research Centre RAS have been supported by Russian Science Foundation grants. They deal with the development of domestic and international inbound tourism in the Russian Arctic, studies on the formation of wild forest reindeer population structure, identification of patterns in the formation of soil nematode communities upon plant invasions, and investigation of cestode invasion in cyprinids.

The income level of residents and the age of the settlement head influence the use of social media by local authorities

Digital inequality disadvantages many groups of people. This is especially evident when comparing the digitalization of large cities vs villages. However, this phenomenon has hardly if at all been studied at the level of individual districts and settlements. Specialists at the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS are working on ways to measure the digital divide at the municipal level by examining the extent to which social networks are used for communication between the authorities and citizens.

A study by scientists from KarRC RAS helping to analyze the traffic situation in Petrozavodsk

Mathematicians from the Karelian Research Centre RAS are working on the Petrozavodsk City traffic model. It will enable researchers and authorities to analyze how temporary street closures, new bypasses, tunnels and bridges will affect the traffic situation. Scientists study the road situation using game-theoretic mathematical methods, searching for optimal strategies for car drivers, transport operators and public transport passengers.

Scientists from KarRC RAS substantiated the designation of territories to be protected within a new national park

Vottovaara National Park is being established in Karelia in an area of around 14 thousand hectares. The relevant Russian Government Ordinance was signed on October 20th. The new protected area will consist of three separate clusters. The scientific component of the nomination papers was prepared by specialists at the Karelian Research Centre RAS.

KarRC RAS and Ladoga Skerries National Park sign a cooperation agreement

Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ladoga Skerries National Park signed a cooperation agreement. The document was signed by Olga Bakhmet, KarRC RAS Director General, and Elena Kutukova, Acting Director of the protected area, during the 21st Strategic Planning Leaders Forum (Forum Strategov), which took place in St. Petersburg on October 30-31. Also, during the forum events Olga Bakhmet presented proposals for strengthening cross-border cooperation between regions of Russia and Belarus and the emerging avenues of scientific cooperation with African countries.
